There is no comprehensive overview about how much online content and services are available for children in Estonia, but it could, however, be said that there are quite a lot of companies and organisations who provide content for children and young people under 18 years of age in a child-friendly manner, including websites and mobile applications. There are initiatives supported by governmental agencies (for example, lasteabi.ee and its application) and there are also private companies and entities who provide content for children. The content typically involves information, fun, and cultural activities, as well as educational materials and exercises.
There is quite a lot of information and training available for children and young people about the positive and safe use of digital devices and the internet, including the role of schools. Also, the Estonian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) plays an active role in providing information and support about the positive use of the internet and digital devices for children, youngsters and their parents. However, there is still a need for more information and advice aimed at parents on how they can support their children's positive use of the internet and digital devices.
The responsibility for implementing the goals set in these documents mainly lies with Ministry of Education and Research and on institutions in its administrative authority (e.g. HITSA). Curriculum for pre-school as well as for general education school includes developing digital competence and skills and schools are entitled to deal with the subject. As such, educational resources and tools, including websites and apps for children and students are provided and available more than resources providing entertaining content.
